Government Affairs Public Policy Agenda

As the third largest Home Builders Association in the State of Ohio serving Portage & Summit Counties, the HBA is committed to its mission of supporting our members by advocating for them on a diverse number of issues that impact their business and bottom line.

The issues examined in this Public Policy Agenda are ones raised by our members and leadership of the association.  The goal of the HBA is to work with our elected officials  to establish regulations and policies that will help to improve and create affordable housing throughout Northeast Ohio.

The intent of the Public Policy Agenda is to briefly articulate the issues that have been identified as particularly important by our members in Portage & Summit Counties.  It is through this agenda, as well as through advocacy, that the HBA intends to communicate these issues to federal, state, and local legislators, policymakers, and regulators.

2007 - 2008 Government Affairs Legislation

Bill #

Name of Bill Sponsored by Position Description
Action Item Ohio Civil Rights Commission   Support Recently a Franklin County court held that the statute of limitations on a claim by a plaintiff under the ADA is one year.  This ruling will bar claims against an architect, builder, etc. after one year of construction no matter when a violation of ADA is discovered.  It will however, still allow for the current owner of a building to be sued for violations of the ADA.  OHBA is going to prepare an amendment that will codify this ruling so that it will apply statewide.
Current Issues Consumer Sales Practice Act Introduced in the next few months Support OHBA has found a legislator to sponsor a bill that will exempt homebuilders from the CSPA in exchange for a mandatory warranty program.  The warranties will either two or three years in duration and when offered, the home builder will be exempt from any of the very harmful provisions of the CSPA.
